This beautiful house in the desirable Laurelhurst neighborhood needed improved functionality for modern living without losing the charm of period correct details. We preserved the original plaster hood, sink wall cabinetry and restored the hardwoods under the layers of linoleum.
The original kitchen had four doorways and very little counter space. We closed the access to the bedrooms giving us corner cabinetry and counters left of the stove. Period inspired paint and classic tile balanced with the modern light fixtures to keep things fresh. We preserved the charming original cabinetry and plaster range hood by installing a mix of complimentary new cabinets and open shelves. New brass hardware echoes lines from the original tudor lighting elsewhere in the home.
As a vintage dealer, the preservation of original elements was a priority to the homeowners. Open shelving and stainless appliances bring modern function to the space without it compromising the charm in this storybook home.
To work with the recess of the original hood, we pulled the range forward and continued the counter behind it for staple utensils and seasonings.

PROJECT NOTES:
The challenge was in weighing the pros and cons of the layout options at hand. Ultimately in this selection the least was lost (a narrow extra doorway lost) and most gained (4 additional cabinets, shelving and the counter space). The open shelves help keep the visual weight of the corner light but also provide real storage.
