The homeowners wanted a retreat to foster their passion for snowsports. Inspired by trips to Hokkaido, the Japandi style lent itself to the mid-century building. We converted a dark one-bedroom into a bright space for the family to gather and host by opening the kitchen, adding a bedroom and creating multi-functional spaces.

The homeowners met on the slopes of Mt Hood, but Niseko is their favorite destination. Slatted maple contrasts the paneling and brings that Japandi vibe. The natural canvas curtains are inspired by storefront banners of Japan. Custom artwork depicting natural elements of Mt Hood contribute to an experience unique to this place.

INSPIRED DETAILS

This building is an icon, and it was important to preserve and embrace the history of it. Originally built in 1949 as the base station for the Skiway tram, the Thunderhead Lodge was developed into staff housing and then into condos in 1979 - where time stood still.

During demo we uncovered a green and grey painted post, which would have been visible as passengers boarded the tram. We embraced the colors and brought in a pop of Persimmon red to nod to the paint of the Skiway aerial tram.

I'm not against barn doors, entirely... we reproduced the tram entry hardware in place with a new purpose - hiding the TV.

We removed the popcorn ceiling and paneling on the beams to simplify surfaces. To get the family into this one bedroom unit we framed in a bunkroom in and choose a wall to wall sleeper sofa that makes use of every inch of the living space.

The primary bedroom includes a desk and two lounge chairs for parents to work or retreat with a book and/or glass of wine.

PROJECT NOTES :
The dark wood paneling is iconic to the building and we felt it was important to preserve it and let it contribute to the design.

The maple flooring is salvaged from the gymnasium of the Riverplace Sport & Spa on the SW Portland waterfront.

The cabinets are salvage from the Rebuilding Center, we used all but one set of 15" drawers that now live in their storage unit for tools.
