This house had a story to tell, it was hiding and once we uncovered it, the design direction was clear. This house became a restoration, it was all about preserving the original elements and undoing a 90s remodel. We renovated the very odd and opinionated primary and basement bathrooms (there were saloon doors) to make them feel more like what might have been there originally. We kept materials and colors nuetral but used beautiful speckled tiles and bold grout to create a confident and elevated example of 70s modern.
The house was originally built in 1972 by an opera singer - her choices were well preserved in the curved staircase, cantilevered travertine hearth, clear fir paneling and vintage wallpaper. We repeated these materials throughout our design making the house feel connected. We brought this outdoor loving family in by introducing luxe materials in earth tones with modern bold fixtures. Juniper green and slate blue velvet sofas paired with bold black fixtures contrast with the original elements for a house that feels organic and timeless.
HONOR THE PAST
I takes a lot of extra work and problem solving to work with existing elements. A lot of contractors don't do remodels for this reason. This wallpaper was a huge challenge to save. but this room is now one of the most magical in the house.
The 90s renovation of this kitchen didn't fit with the period of the house. We brought in a beautiful quartzite to emmulate the travertine elsewhere in the home. We agonized over finding the perfect shade of khaki that felt harmonious and purposeful with all the warm elements and textures. Bold rust grout and contrasting fixtures in chrome and black modernize the space.
The hood cover is made from paneling salvaged from the other side of the room. The original cabinets were also this material, so we kept it on one opposing wall and used it here to balance the space. This way we pay homage, but also get a bright clean space.
